June 2006
Dear
Friends,
We
are proud of
Melrose Day Care Center
and the loving care it has provided
for so many children through the years.
Our
Center
-
Is a
private, non-profit, non-sectarian organization.
-
Is
governed by a volunteer Board of Directors and co-directors, Janet
Dotolo and
Caroline Yoder. Caroline
and Janet have been with the center for 15 and 14 years respectively.
-
Has
been accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young
Children since 1997.
-
Has a
wonderful Part-time Preschool teacher, Deborah Preston.
She has worked at MDCC for 21 years and was given the
prestigious accolade:
Excellence in Education Award for
2001. We are very proud of this and feel that it further exemplifies
our quality program.
-
Cares
for 100 children aged one month through six years old.
-
Provides
breakfast, two snacks and a hot lunch each day.
-
Prides
itself on our low staff-turnover.
Our fifteen teachers have been with us
-
for an average of
8
years each. Two of our
teachers have been here for more
-
than 20 years and 5 of our teachers
have been with us for more than 10 years.
-
Provides
financial assistance for 5 children and their
families.
Is
Evolving
The Center
opened a Part-time Preschool program in the fall of 2001.
The program is designed to accommodate families in need of a
part-time schedule.
The
class is taught by Debbie Preston and is a mixed age group of 3-5 year
old children.
The Center
has become much more involved in the Community over the past 5 years.
We actively participate on the Community Partnerships for
Children and have assisted
in running several educational events for
them.
The Center
installed a brand new security system this fiscal year.
Now anyone who enters
our center needs a code to do so.
And our big project is to build a new
playground!
Our
current playground just hit its 13 year anniversary in November.
We have formulated a playground committee and are actively
seeking funding sources for this project.
In
honor of 35 years of service, we would like to ask our friends to pledge
(please
keep our new playground in mind when you pledge) a sum for this fiscal
year.
Please click on our
Donation
Button
on our
homepage and make your tax-deductible donation directly on-line.
Your support will help Melrose Day Care Center continue to provide quality
care, hopefully for at least another thirty-five more years!
Sincerely,
The
Board of Directors

IMPORTANT:
For Security,
if you come into the daycare at the same time as
someone you do not recognize, please bring them to a teacher or bring them
to the office.
Do not allow them to walk into the
center alone. Please remember to close the door securely
when entering and exiting. Also, it is most important that you do
not
give the code to other people, only the parents of the
children at the center and the teachers should have access to the code.

Penguins

Penguins and Dolphins
classrooms were mentioned on the Rachael Ray TV ( Food Network) show on October
18, 2006 at 10:00 a.m. The children in these classrooms had sent decorated
Poland
Springs water bottles to her which she strung up with lights in a
lovely display. A parent had made the connection and had given us the empty
Poland Springs bottles to decorate. We all thank her.
Rachael Ray accepts children's art for her
show and said she plans to keep our display up for the next year for all
to admire.
What an exciting event. Congratulations to all!
We are trying to get a tape for all of us to see...
September 22 - Peter Sheridan
was here to sing with the children.

Munchkins enjoying Peter...
Thank you, Peter. As always, we are grateful for your time and entranced by your
talent.
Please
help with our Cookbook Fundraiser.

Send, or bring in, your favorite recipes, appetizer, main course,
dessert, etc.
You can include the history if you like. All
will be appreciated as this is
important to all of us.
Teddy Bear teachers would appreciate donations of empty
dishwashing containers:
'those that squirt.'
National Hand Washing Awareness
Initiated
by Henry the Hand Foundation and its founder,
family practitioner Dr. William Sawyer, National
Hand Washing Awareness Week is designed to promote
the importance of good hand
hygiene in preventing
the spread of infections. Help stop the spread of
germs by following
Henry the Hand's 4 Principles of
Hand Awareness:
1) WASH your hands when they are dirty and BEFORE
eating.
2) DO NOT cough into your hands.
3) DO NOT sneeze into your hands.
(If a tissue is not handy, pull open the collar of
your shirt and sneeze
into the inside of the
shirt.)
4) Above all, DO NOT put your fingers into your
eyes, nose or mouth!
Have your child sing Happy Birthday to
him/herself once while washing
his/her hands
to insure a thorough washing. Make it fun
and let's keep it going!
Build
a solid constitution and a good attitude. Learn how
to start or maintain
a healthful routine of exercise
and good-eating habits.

Children
and Seat Belts
When
traveling this coming holiday season with your children, please be aware of
the
necessity of proper safety seats and belts for all ages.
While seat belt use for all children is at a record high, a new study
by the
National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA) reports
that 15 of every 100 infants still ride
in the front seat. Infants riding
in the front seat are at increased risk
for injury from crashes
or
deploying air bags, even if they are in infant seats.
Good Parenting Action Point
Follow the advice of NHTSA chief, Dr. Jeffrey Runge,
"The
only way to keep these children safe is to put them in an
infant/child safety seat appropriate to their age in the back seat".
